About Our Study – SYNERGIC Trials

Meet our Study PI, Dr. Manuel Montero-Odasso:

The SYNERGIC Trial is the first of its kind to test a multi-modal intervention combining physical exercises, with or without cognitive training or vitamin D supplementation, to improve cognition and mobility in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We believe that results from our study will contribute to establishing the efficacy of an integrated therapeutic strategy, or a multi-modal approach, to stabilize and reverse cognitive decline in older individuals with MCI, and help to delay progression to dementia syndromes. It is estimated that 500,000 older Canadians have MCI and even a modest one-year delay in dementia incidence could save the Canadian Healthcare System over $109 billion over the next 30 years. Our trial is aiming at this goal of reducing the burden on the healthcare system and improving outcomes for these older adults.

“The SYNERGIC Trial… combine[s] physical exercises, cognitive training and vitamin D to test how these interventions work together to improve cognition in older adults at risk for dementia. The trial is targeting cognitive decline at the earliest stage, individuals with MCI, where interventions are more likely to have an effect and can be monitored.” – SJHC Annual Report
